Students got a taste of their future careers as they celebrated the launch of new post-16 courses at The Fuse - Northumberland Skills’ Campus in Prudhoe.

The talented bunch from Collingwood School and Media Arts College took part in taster sessions in art & design and occupational studies – two of the study programmes on offer at The Fuse from September 2023.

Home to Northumberland Skills – the county council’s learning and skills service – The Fuse already offers a range of full and part-time courses for school leavers and adults.

From September, Northumberland Skills is expanding its provision with new courses designed for young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

The Supported Learning programme aims to help young people between 16-24 years with an Education, Health and Care (EHC) plan to reach their full potential.

Teaching will focus on students’ needs and aspirations - boosting confidence and building skills for work and life.

Vocational units will also help inspire students with ideas for their next steps – such as into careers in creative industries or childcare.

Northumberland Skills is also working closely with local businesses to offer work experience placements to help prepare young people for the world of work and celebrate the benefits of an inclusive workforce.

Cllr Guy Renner-Thompson, is the council’s Cabinet member for Inspiring Young People.

He said: “We want all our young people to reach their full potential and that’s why we are expanding our post-16 offer for young people with special educational needs across the county.

“The Fuse is a fantastic centre here in the Tyne Valley and these new courses will support learners on their journey towards adulthood and rewarding future careers.”

Cllr Gordon Stewart, is county councillor for Prudhoe South.

He said: "I was absolutely delighted to attend the Fuse Prudhoe for the launch of this fantastic new support for young people right here in Tynedale.

"This new initiative will provide a great new level of support for the young people of Tynedale and their families."

Northumberland Skills delivers a wide range of inclusive full and part-time courses to hundreds of school leavers and adults at its campuses across the county.
